March for Meals

Missoula Aging Services will participate in the 2015 March for Meals, a nationwide celebration of the local Meals on Wheels programs that keep seniors independent in their own homes. MAS’ campaign will include a donation drive, Community Champion’s Day and several events by local business partners.

Last year, Meals on Wheels provided more than 96,000 meals to older adults and eligible adults with disabilities in Missoula County. More than 100 volunteer drivers deliver the hot, nutritious meals Monday through Friday and provide an important check on clients as well. Routes extend around Missoula and many areas in the county including Seeley Lake, Condon, Frenchtown, Clinton and Lolo.

Meals on Wheels relies on community support through volunteering and contributions to keep the program strong and able to meet the rising demand for home delivered nutrition. In order to provide the current level of service, MAS needs to raise $100,000 from the community each year. Last year, donations raised during March for Meals accounted for one-third of that amount.

To join the fundraising by collecting donations for Meals on Wheels, get a collection form at the MAS office, 337 Stephens Ave., or download one from missoulaagingservices.org.

Besides the monthlong fundraising drive, the campaign includes Community Champions Week when public officials accompany regular volunteer drivers to deliver meals. A number of public officials will deliver on routes in Missoula on March 16, including Mayor John Engen and county commissioners Bill Carey, Jean Curtiss and Cola Rowley. Several local businesses have also partnered with MAS during March to hold fundraising events.
