BILLINGS - The National Transportation Safety Board has released a preliminary report of the events that occurred before a small airplane crashed into a warehouse, killing the pilot.
The Beechcraft 1900C, carrying more than two tons of mail, crashed into a warehouse early on May 23, causing an explosion and fire and killing 40-year-old pilot Kelly Lynch.
The report states that shortly after the plane took off, air traffic control advised Lynch to slightly alter his flight plan, and then resume his own navigation.
The pilot acknowledged the instructions, but radar showed the plane instead started a slow right turn before falling off radar.
The pilot had no further contact with air traffic control.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
