GREAT FALLS - State wildlife officials say a Meagher County rancher shot and killed a wolf that was threatening his cattle.
The Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks says the rancher reported shooting the wolf early Wednesday on private land about 20 miles northwest of White Sulphur Springs.
The rancher told FWP the wolf had chased some cattle, pinning them in the corner of a pasture.
State wolf management specialist Mike Ross says the agency confirmed it was a legal killing.
Ross says there have been sporadic reports of wolf activity in Meagher County, but no known wolf pack in the area.
The Northern Rocky Mountain gray wolf population was removed from federal protection in late March. Under state management guidelines, wolves can be killed if they are seen threatening to kill livestock.
