HAMILTON – The investigation into an early morning dispute last week between two neighbors that put one man in the hospital with a gunshot wound is continuing.
“Any time an investigation concerns a shooting inside an occupied home, many factors, including self-defense, must be considered,” said Ravalli County Sheriff Chris Hoffman in a news release.
Hoffman said investigators are expected to submit their findings to the Ravalli County Attorney’s Office later this week. The sheriff’s office has not released the names of the men involved in the shooting.
The Ravalli Republic has learned from a number of sources that the man who fired the gun is Wayne Kelly, a Libertarian candidate for Ravalli County sheriff.
The man who was shot is Michael Teeple, a neighbor of Kelly’s.
Teeple was shot in the head and the stomach, said Barbara Frink, a friend and neighbor of Teeple’s. He remains in critical condition at a Missoula hospital.
“His injuries are severe,” Frink said. “We are hoping that he will improve soon and be released from the ICU.”
The shooting happened last Thursday at a residence near the end of Little Sleeping Child Road.
Initial information released by the sheriff’s department last week indicated one man, presumably Teeple, entered the home of his neighbor (Kelly) without invitation and a scuffle ensued. During the scuffle, the homeowner shot and wounded the other man.
Teeple was transported to Missoula via a medical helicopter.
No charges have been filed against either man at this time.
“My entire community has been victimized by this,” Frink said.
