A reward has been offered for help in a nearly month-old investigation into a fatal shooting in Sanders County.

William “Bill” Conko Camel was shot dead in Agency on the night of Oct. 5. While the Sanders County Sheriff’s Office has interviewed three persons of interest in the crime, it has yet to make an arrest. Now, Sanders County Crime stoppers is offering $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest of the perpetrator(s).

This latest step comes amid sharp criticism of the Sanders County Sheriff’s Office. Several commenters on social media accused Preston Rossbach, who was later arrested in Missoula in connection with a different shooting. Conko Camel’s family members have said they provided the Sanders County Sheriff’s Office information on the perpetrators, which the sheriff failed to act on.

But Sheriff Tom Rummel, who is up for re-election this year, has stood by his handling of the case. He told the Missoulian last week that “We’ve done everything within our power to bring this to prosecution. … At this point we don’t have enough facts to tie anyone to that shooting.”
