Almost, but not quite, came the report from the National Weather Service in Missoula Sunday evening.

The Garden City hit 97 degrees Sunday afternoon, just shy of the record for June 29 n 100 degrees, set in 1937.

But there's still hope to set a new mark on Monday, meteorologists said, as the day's predicted high is 100 degrees n 3 degrees better than the record, 97 degrees, set in 1990.

Then the heat wave of recent days should start to taper off a bit, with high temperatures the remainder of Independence Week expected in the low- to mid-90s.
