A 21-year-old man died in a structure fire near Winston early Monday morning.
The fire was reported shortly before 1 a.m. Monday on the 190 block of Weasel Creek Road near Winston, according to Broadwater County Sheriff Wynn Meehan. The fire involved a detached garage with an apartment above it.
“By the time my deputies arrived, it was fully engulfed,” he said.
A 21-year-old man was trapped inside the apartment and likely became disoriented due to smoke inhalation, Meehan said. There was no external exit from the building accessible. Someone in the main residence put up a ladder and broke out a window, but was unable to guide the man outside.
“He tried to get the kid to come to the window, but with the thick smoke it looks like he became discombobulated,” Meehan said. “Obviously it was a very fast, hot burning fire and the young man was trapped inside.”
The garage and apartment burned to the ground. The house also sustained some damage, he said.
“The house did catch fire but they were able to put it out really quickly,” Meehan said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Meehan does not suspect any foul play. The body will be transported to Billings for an autopsy. The name has not been released.
Multiple Broadwater County fire stations responded to the fire, including those from Winston, Townsend and Toston.
