Noxon downs Superior, wins 14-C title

SUPERIOR - The Noxon Red Devils secured the District 14-C regular-season title Saturday night with a 74-66 victory over division rival Superior.

Senior guard Chad Ball, who finished with a game-high 22 points, delivered the clinching blow by making six free throws with under a minute to play.

His first two freebies broke a 66-66 tie with 40 seconds remaining. After Superior couldn't convert on its trips down the floor, the Bobcats turned to fouling. Four more free throws by Ball, and a layup put the game away for the Red Devils.

Noxon, which finished 10-2 in District 14-C and 15-3 overall, takes the top seed into next week's district tournament at Polson. The Red Devils have won four of the last five District 14-C tournaments.

"I don't know how many district titles they have," said Superior coach Chris Toivonen. "But they played like a team that was worthy of that again."

Superior (14-4) also finished the regular season with a 10-2 league mark, but both of its losses were to Noxon.

Noxon senior guard Bart Haflich hit three 3-pointers and finished with 15 points. Haflich hit a big trey to tie the game with two minutes left. Noxon was 8 of 11 from 3-point range. Nick Posselt also had three treys and finished with 13 points.

"You just have to give them a lot of credit," said Toivonen. "They made shot after shot after shot. Whenever they needed a basket, they got it. And a lot of those were three's."

Junior guard Brian Campbell put in 16 points to lead the Bobcats and senior forward Mike Donovan chipped in 15.
