My name is Sandra Vasecka, and I am pleased to announce my candidacy for Ward 6 on the Missoula City Council!

I graduated high school here in Missoula at Sentinel High School in 2009. After obtaining my bachelor’s degree in business management at Montana State University, I chose to return and build my life here because of my love for our community and our outdoor recreational opportunities.

What makes Missoula truly unique, however, are the people who choose to live here. Our city is populated by a shared network of family, friends, and neighbors who are always there to support, encourage, and add value to our greater society. This powerful sense of community is something that I will always cherish.

Unfortunately, Missoula is at a crossroads. Our tax burden has continued to punish the lower- and middle-income classes, to the benefit of wealthy property owners and select developers. At the same time, our infrastructure is crumbling and our streets are becoming dangerous, filled with potholes throughout the spring and summer and remaining unplowed in the winter.

Our wonderful police are understaffed, underfunded and overworked. The tax dollars they desperately need to help protect us from the rising crime rates are being diverted to projects that some believe are more important than the safety of our city.

Missoula is a place where folks want to spend their entire life, yet our senior citizens who live on fixed incomes are being taxed out of their homes. I have personally seen this issue happen, where our residents must choose to either properly protect their home from fire and other perils, or pay their property tax bill.

The younger population of our city, who started their lives here, are now unable to afford a home. Thanks in part to our local government’s policies, the housing costs in Missoula are now over 50% higher than the national average. Our hometown is being groomed into a playground for the very wealthy.

Our local business owners are now facing increasing fees and regulations. These policies make it more difficult to properly pay their employees, as well as their property, federal, state and unemployment taxes.

Our veterans, who have sacrificed more than I will ever know, are being dismissed and need our help to transition back into their lives on the home front.

Like many Missoulians, I have grown frustrated with the lack of fiscal responsibility of our leadership. With your help, I look forward to helping Missoula grow out of this era of irresponsible spending and one-sided “solutions.”

Together, we can bring a much-needed change to what Missoula was before we became divided; the Garden City where you can grow up on safe streets, find your love for the outdoors, buy your first home and raise a beautiful family. This is the Montana dream, and I am excited for your vote to help Missoula fiscally prosper once again.
