Great Falls plans for a mega slaughterhouse will harm our health and drive up our overall healthcare costs.
American’s diet high in animal products is the No. 1 cause of death and chronic illness in our country. The science is clear that heart disease, type 2 diabetes and many more can be reversed through a switch to a plant-based diet.
Medications to treat these illness are mainstay for many U.S. adults. While they are sometimes needed and are lifesaving, they are often costly, and have troublesome and even harmful side effects. Adherence to these medications is less than ideal.
Inside a slaughterhouse, workers will participate in and witness the slaughter of sentient, feeling animals for eight or more hours daily. It’s well documented that this environment is psychologically traumatic and an employee can expect to have an increased risk of post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, which will create a need for more access to mental health services. If more people were aware of the suffering animals experience during this process, they’d be less apt to support it.
The solution to living more vibrant and healthy lives is making the switch to a plant-based diet. A slaughterhouse won’t help us get there.
