Editor's note: There hasn't been much call for their services so far this winter, but judging from the letters we're getting, among Missoula's favorite neighbors are those who shovel others' sidewalks on snowy mornings.
Today's Good Neighbor column features letters about two such doers of good deeds.
'Clears the entire block'
Our good neighbor is Frank Hazelbaker, 114 Sentinel Ave.
Whenever we have snow, Frank comes out with his snow blower and clears the entire block. He even does our driveway - and the other side of the street.
Frank loves to do this, and we love Frank for doing it.
Wally and Bernice Jensen, 100 Sentinel Ave.
More than just snow help
We have a good neighbor we would like to nominate for recognition. He is Harry LaForge, 2800 Lorraine Drive, here in Missoula. His wife, Sandy, has also been very helpful.
Harry often plows neighborhood driveways with his snow blower when we don't manage to keep up with the weather systems, or when we are out of town.
He and Sandy water our houseplants when we're on a trip. He regularly loans us his garden tools (i.e., small chain saw) when we need them.
And the latest big help was when my wife fell and broke her hip while touristing in South Africa. The break displaced completely shortly before landing in Salt Lake City, on the way home.
She had emergency surgery in Salt Lake to have a partial hip replacement. I wasn't on the trip, so drove to Salt Lake the next day.
Harry was very helpful in opening the house and helping our sprinkler service blow out the sprinkler system for the winter. He checked the house while I was in Salt Lake for the two weeks it took Clara to recover enough for the drive home.
He made phone calls regarding ballet tickets Clara had ordered. He and Sandy watered the houseplants while I was gone. All this was a great help when Clara was in the hospital and I was - a bit frazzled.
It's nice to have such a neighbor.
Ron Erickson, 2835 Lorraine Drive
