Missoulian Softball roundup

Senior pitcher Whitney Eriksson tossed a one-hitter to earn her first victory of the season in the nightcap of Missoula Sentinel's doubleheader sweep of the Orofino, Idaho, Maniacs Friday at Playfair Park.

The Spartans (6-2) won 15-0 in five innings behind Eriksson and 3-2 in the opener.

Eriksson's first appearance of the season resulted in a no decision against Kalispell on Thursday. Friday she struck out two while allowing one walk against Orofino.

"She was behind a couple of weeks on practices because she was in volleyball and took a choir trip," said Sentinel coach Brian Bessette. "But we gave her some time and she's finally got her arm back in shape."

The Spartans pounded out 12 hits in the game and finished things off with an eight-run fourth inning. Eriksson led the attack, going 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs.

"Our bats really got hot in that fourth inning. It was fun to see. We've been waiting for an inning like that for a long time," Bessette said.

It was a different story in the first game as Sentinel managed only three hits and won it on a bunt in the seventh inning. Freshman pitcher Stefani Hertz held her own, striking out seven and allowing just four hits over seven innings to gain her fourth win of the season.

Leah Madden scored the winning run on a bunt by Mandy Bighorn. Madden scored from second base when the throw at first hit Bighorn in the back. Orofino rallied in the top of the fifth on two-run double by Nikole Sady.

Hollie Zeier and Meaghan Houlihan each drove in tow runs to lead Missoula Big Sky to a non-conference victory over Orofino, Idaho, at McEnaney Field.

Big Sky led 6-1, but watched the Maniacs scream back and almost win it in the seventh.

Foshag, a freshman, struck out 10 to earn her first win. She pitched the first four innings and then came back in the seventh.
