BILLINGS — Jerry Pearsall broke away from a three-way to take a three shot lead Wednesday after two rounds of the 65th Montana State Senior Golf Tournament.

Pearsall, of Billings, shot a 1-under 71 at Laurel Golf Club to follow up the 67 that he, Dave Eames (Billings) and Craig Hurlbert (Magnolia) shot on Tuesday at Lake Hills.

Eames fell three strokes back with a 2-over at Laurel, while Hurlbert shot 6-over and is seven shots behind. Gregg Morstein of Dillon, playing in his first senior championship posted a second-consecutive round of 73 to move into fourth place at 146.

One of the highlights of the day came from Curt Wheeler, who aced the 17th hole. Wheeler, of Billings, used a 7-iron from 157 yards out.

The championship group pairings will play the final round Thursday at Yellowstone Country Club beginning at 8:30 a.m.
