BOZEMAN — For the third straight year, Montana State has won the Brawl of the Wild series over rival Montana.
The Bobcats finished the 2018-19 season with an 11-6 record in the series, a head-to-head competition with the Grizzlies that accounts for matchups between the two schools in the sports they both sponsor.
The MSU volleyball program went 2-2 against UM. In cross country, the Bobcats earned two Brawl of the Wild points, as did the football team after earning a comeback, last-second win at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.
The Bobcats earned two women’s basketball victories over the Grizzlies and lost twice on the men’s side.
The MSU track and field program clinched the Brawl of the Wild trophy at February’s Big Sky Indoor Championships in Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. The Bobcat men and women both finished second at the meet, while Montana was ninth on the men’s side and sixth among women’s teams. Those performances gave MSU a 9-3 lead in the rivalry series, in which a maximum of 17 points can be earned.
MSU’s final two Brawl of the Wild points came last month, when the men’s tennis team beat UM in a dual 4-3 and the golf team finished sixth (four sports ahead of the Griz) in the Big Sky Championship.
UM earned its final three series points with a 4-3 women’s tennis dual victory, a third-place men’s finish at the Big Sky outdoor track championships (MSU was fifth) and a fourth-place finish on the women’s side (MSU was seventh).
UM won the first three Brawl of the Wild trophies, beginning in 2013-14, and MSU won its first in 2016-17.
