Montana's offensive, defensive lines

The Griz offensive and defensive lines collide during the start of a play during a scrimmage.

MISSOULA — The University of Montana no longer has a quarterback depth problem.

Former Alabama walk-on quarterback Wheeler Harris is transferring to UM, according to a tweet sent on Tuesday morning. A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed the tweet's accuracy to 406mtsports.com on Tuesday afternoon.

The tweet came from Harris' mom, Kyle Cavolo.

Harris, a 6-foot-3, 198-pound pro-style quarterback, was a true freshman last season at Alabama, learning from quarterbacks Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa during their national championship season. Harris lined up on the scout team last season for the Crimson Tide. Despite being a true freshman, he was dressed out for most of the games and could be spotted on the sidelines

Harris completed 57 percent of his passes with 15 touchdowns and 1,888 yards as a senior at Mountain View High School in Mesa, Arizona, according to MyNewsMesa.com, a defunct news site that used to cover all things Mesa.

According to that article, Harris didn't have any offers out of high school, despite being in talks with a few schools like Division II Adams State — where current Montana offensive coordinator Timm Rosenbach had been head coach since 2015. Harris received his preferred walk-on offer from Alabama the day after his high school graduation.

Since Harris is transferring from an FBS school to an FCS school, he should be eligible to play immediately.

With Harris in the fold, the Grizzlies have four quarterbacks on the roster — not including incoming true freshman Garrett Graves.

Juniors Dalton Sneed and Cam Humphrey, redshirt freshman Tanner Wilson and now Harris round out the quarterbacks room. None of them saw time at quarterback last season for Montana, as Wilson was the only quarterback of the four on UM's roster.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Harris no longer appeared on Alabama's official roster. Montana's official roster hasn't been updated in months, as several players who have left the program including Gresch Jensen, Chris Favoroso, Cody McCombs and Ashton Torres still remain on the 2018 roster.
