Senior's Sydney Blain

Bozeman's Alexa Coyle (15) knocks Sydney Blain to the ground during a match against Billings Senior last fall. Coyle, a Griz soccer signee, has been named Montana's Gatorade player of the year.

Nearly eight months after leading Bozeman to the State AA soccer title, incoming Griz freshman Alexa Coyle has been named the Gatorade Montana Girls Soccer Player of the Year.

Coyle, the younger sister of former Griz linebacker Brock Coyle who is now a member of the San Francisco 49ers, will give the Grizzlies a pair of Gatorade players on next season’s team.

Rising redshirt junior midfielder Maddy Emerick, who played at Billings Senior, was the 2013-14 winner.

The award isn’t announced until June each year because 20 states play high school soccer during the spring.

The 5-foot-10 forward/midfielder, who was voted the Montana Player of the Year as a senior by the Montana High School Coaches Association, led the Hawks to a 15-0-2 record last fall and a state championship.

She scored 29 goals as a senior and added 15 assists. She had two goals and four assists as the Hawks outscored their three tournament opponents 10-0, including a 3-0 shutout of Helena Capital in the title match.

Coyle, who totaled 45 career goals, was one of six players named to the Fall All-Northwest Region team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Coyle will be one of 14 newcomers on next fall’s team under seventh-year coach Mark Plakorus.
