Montana’s Kellie Rubel has been named Big Sky Conference women’s basketball Player of the Week after an outstanding performance against Portland on Sunday afternoon.
Rubel, a senior guard from Bozeman, scored a season-high 24 points on 5-of-12 shooting and 11-of-12 from the free-throw line to lead the Lady Griz to a 69-55 victory at the University of Portland’s Chiles Center.
Rubel went 3 for 4 from behind the arc with all three of her treys coming in the opening six minutes of action. She finished the contest with six rebounds and five assists as Montana improved to an even 4-4 on the season.
Montana returns to action Thursday as the Lady Griz travel to face Seattle in nonconference action. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. Mountain.
Sacramento State’s Mikh McKinney has been selected as the Big Sky men’s basketball Player of the Week.
McKinney, a 6-foot-1 senior guard from Union City, California, averaged 26.5 points, 6.5 steals, 5.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game, helping the Hornets to a 1-1 record. McKinney shot 60 percent from the field and made all nine of his free throws. He also played 37.5 minutes per game.
In an 80-75 loss to Portland on Sunday, McKinney scored 32 points with eight assists, seven steals and seven rebounds. He made 13 of 21 shots from the floor and five free throws. He set career-highs for points and steals in a game. Late in the contest, he became the 13th player in school history to score his 1,000th career point.
In a 73-59 win over Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, McKinney scored 21 points with six steals, three assists and a rebound. McKinney made 8 of 14 shots from the floor, and was 4 of 4 from the free-throw line.
Montana's nominee was senior guard Jordan Gregory, who averaged 25 points a game in two losses.
