BUTTE – The American Legion baseball team in Butte is cleaning out equipment and even infield dirt from the Alumni Coliseum baseball field at Montana Tech as the college prepares to add turf to its football field, which is also the baseball stadium’s outfield.
Butte Miners manager Mike Semmens tells the Montana Standard that county workers are removing everything owned by Butte-Silver Bow over the next few weeks, including the clay infield, which was hauled in from Missouri because it packs down and drains.
Semmens says the dirt and equipment will be stored at a county yard. Coach Jeff LeProwse says the Miners plan to play at Copper Mountain Park for the next couple of seasons while they try to find land for a new field.
Tech athletic director Joe McClafferty says Tech plans to begin installing the turf next May and have it ready for the 2013 season.
