Helena High advances to the state championship match

The bench celebrates as Helena High pulls ahead of Helena Capital on Friday to advance to the Class AA State Championship.

HELENA -- The Montana High School Class AA through Class C girls followed a relatively predictable pattern, except Class B, to the 406mtsports.com polls.

All season, with the exception of the week after their 34-31 loss Feb. 15 at the hands of Kalispell Glacier, the Helena High girls owned the No. 1 spot in Class AA, and although Billings West and Helena Capital challenged the Bengals, Helena proved to be the superior team. The Bengals fulfilled their quest for a three-peat by dominating the Golden Bears 55-37 to capture the Class AA championship.

All season in Class A, it seemed as if there was one classification for Havre, and the rest were playing for second place. The Blue Ponies were led by Sadie Filius and Kyndall Keller, who scored a combined 30 points and nearly outscored Hardin alone in their 42-36 victory.

Class B was one of the more unpredictable classes, and the Three Forks team, lead by Kyle Olson, made it more interesting. Plus, before the start of the Divisional tournament, Townsend -- a group that ranked near the top for the majority of the season -- and Whitehall both suffered significant injuries.

In the end, it was Wolf Point and Florence-Carlton playing for the crown. Wolf Point convincingly defeated Florence 48-35 in the championship led by Imani Bighorn's 19-point surge.

All season, Box Elder was one of the top teams out of the northern portion of Montana's Class C girls, and the Bears capped it off with an exclamation point in a 48-42 victory over a scrappy Roy-Winifred team.
