Missoula Big Sky's defense set the tone, and Maddy Shaide's big third quarter clinched the Eagles' 58-40 nonconference girls' basketball win Thursday at the Big Sky gym.
The Western AA Eagles (4-0) led 9-0 after one quarter and 28-7 at halftime. Then Shaide halted any thoughts of a Butte comeback, scoring 14 of her game-high 24 points in the third period.
"We played very well defensively in first half. The shots didn't fall early but our defense kept us going," said Big Sky coach Damian Droessler. "Then we came out in the third quarter and put things away."
Kendall Mooney scored nine points and came up with four of Big Sky's 13 steals. Reserve Kelsi McEnaney added 11 points for the Eagles.
"Kelsi took very good shots off the bench and played great defensively," Droessler said. "She's definitely coming into her own."
Abby Dodge led the Eastern AA Bulldogs with 13 points, nine coming from the line. The game featured 52 fouls and 67 free throws.
