On a day filled with close finishes, Thompson Falls senior Charlie Knapp made sure Friday didn't end that way.

Knapp became just the second prep sprinter in Montana to run the 400 meters in less than 50 seconds this spring when he stopped the clock at 49.99 to win his new-found specialty at the Western B divisional track and field meet at Missoula County Stadium.

It was the final event of the day and pretty much all eyes were focused on the track as Knapp pulled ahead within the first 150 meters. He held off Darby speedster Aaron Johnston down the homestretch, before pulling up slightly at the end. Knapp, who came out for track for the first time this season, is still getting used to some of the feedback he gets from the sidelines.

"Yeah, I got a lot of friends that like to cheer for me," said Knapp, still catching his breath. "They like to yell ‘Charlie, he's right on you.' Even though I know they're not, I always listen to them."

The long-legged Knapp joins Whitefish's Anto Daoud as the only sprinters to run sub-50 in the 400 this season. Daoud won the Northwestern A 400 title in 49.65 on Friday. Knapp also finished a close second to Bigfork's Keenan Evans in the 200 trials. Evans is the Class B leader in that event.

As a whole, though, the Western B divisional was pretty close.

The Bigfork girls lead Superior by a single point, 34-33, after seven events, while Eureka (29), Darby (26) and Florence (24) round out the top five. The Darby boys hold a narrow 55-53 lead on Thompson Falls through eight events, while Loyola Sacred Heart (35) and Plains (34) are separated by just one point for third place.

The divisional wraps up Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. for field events and 11 a.m. for track events. The top six placers in each event move on to the State B meet in Laurel next weekend.

Knapp was one of the brightest stars on the first day of the divisional meet. His win in the triple jump, with a mark of 41 feet, 11 1/4 inches, got his day started. He beat Florence's Ross Mangun and rival Taylor Firestone of Plains in that event.

"Taylor has beaten me in every meet so far this season. He's an awesome triple jumper," said Knapp, who also took third in the high jump. "On the bus ride down here, my coach said, ‘You're going to beat Taylor tomorrow, right?' and I said, ‘Alright, let's do it.' "

Of the four meet records set on Friday at Missoula County Stadium, only one of them was on the Western B side. Deer Lodge senior Brandon Forson felled former teammate David Phillips' three-year-old mark in the discus. Forson slung his disc 179 feet, 4 inches to best Phillips, who threw 175-2, as well as worthy opponents Trent Thompson, of Plains, and Mike Wood, of Thompson Falls.

Forson, who is undecided on his college plans, has been talking with Phillips, who throws for Montana State.

"I've been letting him know how I'm doing," Forson said. "Hopefully I get another big one next week."

Loyola senior Brandan Haggarty won a tight race with Thompson Falls' Will Dalby in the javelin. Dalby cleared 184-1 1/2 before Haggarty took the event with a throw of 185-1 1/2.

Darby's points came primarily from distance runners Doug Raymer and Seth Garbett. Raymer won the 800 and was runner-up to Garbett in the 3,200. Garbett was third in the 800.

On the girls' side, Bigfork was the the big winner on the first day of competition.

Senior Kayla Carlson comfortably won the 1,600 over Darby's Heather Demorest. Carlson, who finished in 5:10.93 on Friday, has clocked a 5:05.1 this season. Teammate Quinci Paine was runner-up to Eureka's Bailey Malecha in the 400 and helped the Vals win the short relay.

Superior was second in the short relay and got a runner-up finish from Kaitlynn Koke in the javelin, which was won by Loyola Sacred Heart sophomore Kiernan Haggarty. Haggarty leads the state in chucking the spear, but needed just a throw of 131-4 to take the divisional title. Haggarty was second in the discus to Florence junior Megan Leathers.

Darby's Sarah Jakober, a junior, and Rachel Wetzsteon, a senior, went 1-2 in the triple jump. Jakober made 'em rake the pit all the way to her mark of 33-4 1/2.
