BILLINGS - The Class AA Missoula Mavericks didn't get to play at Dehler Park as originally scheduled Saturday, but the Mavs did manage to beat one of the teams expected to contend for this year's American Legion baseball state title.

After a car accident early Saturday morning at the Magic City's new home of the Pioneer League's Billings Mustangs, the Mavericks' contest with the Billings Royals was moved to Pirtz Field, where Missoula earned a 9-6 victory.

"The guys were a little disappointed," said Mavs manager Brent Hathaway. "They really wanted to play in Dehler. But they came out and played good baseball anyway."

Missoula center fielder Ben Roberts smacked his fifth home run of the season and added a double in pacing the Mavs' 11-hit afternoon. Brody Miller was 3-for-5 with a double and Steven DeYoung and Riley King drove in two apiece for Missoula (13-1).

Mavericks starting pitcher Andrew Sopko improved to 2-0 by throwing six innings and allowing six hits and a walk while striking out six. Brent Daugherty worked a scoreless ninth to earn his first save.

Blake Loran doubled twice and drove in one for the Royals.

The Mavs stay in Billings to face the Royals in a doubleheader Sunday at 10 a.m.
