Nothing short of a rainstorm could stop the Bates siblings Saturday.

Kalispell Glacier freshman Kellen Bates stayed unbeaten with three wins en route to a Missoula Invitational singles title in the boys' No. 1 bracket at Playfair Park. Sister Liana Bates, a junior, dropped just one game in two matches in the girls' No. 1 singles bracket.

But rain prevented Liana's bracket and five others from completion. The tournament was called around 4 p.m.

Kellen Bates still hasn't dropped a set this season, with a pair of victories over two-time defending Class AA state champion Eric Braun to his credit. He beat Braun's Missoula Hellgate teammate, Tony Mayer, in Saturday's title match, 6-1, 6-2.

"He's a smart player," Glacier coach Josh Munro said of Bates. "His mental game for a freshman is far above what most of the seniors have at this point.

"He has a game plan for every match, knows what he's trying to accomplish and uses every match to work on something in his game."

Liana Bates has dropped just one match this season, that coming last week at the Helena Invitational to defending Class AA champion Ellie Crum of Great Falls.

Liana estimates she's lost to Crum more than 15 times, including a 6-2, 6-4 decision in last year's state final. But the tide seems to be slowly turning.

"She's been steadily gaining on her for the last three years actually, and that was a big step to take last weekend," said Munro, referring to Bates taking a set off Crum for the first time. "That is something that really helps. You want to have growth in every match."

Maybe it's Liana's soccer background that makes her so determined and resilient. For years soccer has come in a close second to tennis on her list of favorites. Playing both is one reason she has closed the gap on Crum.

"It's pretty tough when you lose to someone as much as I have, but I just have to believe I can win," Liana said. "After that match last weekend I definitely think I can. I just need to keep working on getting more consistent, trying to get (Crum) tired and coming to the net more."

One of Liana's secrets to success is her brother Kellen, a willing hitting partner. She believes she's hit her stride the last two weeks, and is feeling good about her prospects with state coming up in three weeks.

"I'm like wow, I feel better than I have in a while," said the junior, who is getting looks from Montana State.

Had it not rained Saturday afternoon, Liana would have faced teammate Hailey Blalack in the finals of the No. 1 singles bracket. In the No. 2 girls' singles bracket, Kalispell Flathead's Barrie Sugarman and Helena Capital's Michele Bayuk reached the finals.

In No. 3 girls' singles, Flathead's Isabelle Brooks and Capital's Kelly Kuhn reached the finals.

In No. 2 boys' singles, Missoula Sentinel's Aaron Schwartz and Helena's Colin Harris reached the title match. Zach Mauer of Hellgate and Matt Thomas of Helena were finalists in the No. 3 bracket and Kyle LeDuc of Glacier and Sean Collins of Helena in the No. 4 bracket.

Doubles brackets were held at Fort Missoula. Four Hellgate teams reached finals including Lane Brown/Sam Waldorf, Guy Williams/Chris Rotar, Megan Woody/Claire Rappold and Cyrra Robinson/Katie Martens.
