BILLINGS - They came together. Now they're leaving together.

For the first time since Kalispell added a second high school three seasons ago, the Flathead and Glacier boys' basketball teams qualified for the State AA tournament during the same year. In a small twist of fate, the two squads both made their exit from the three-day tourney on Friday.

Billings Skyview beat the Braves 50-43 in the first loser-out game of the day at MetraPark. Billings Senior eliminated the Wolfpack with a 61-50 win in the following loser-out contest.

"That was neat," said Glacier head coach Mark Harkins. "When the split happened I remember the Flathead coaches and us got together and somebody said won't it be cool when the day comes when both of us are at state. But I don't know if any of us thought it would've been this fast."

Both Skyview and Senior extended their seasons to another round of loser-out games Saturday morning, while Flathead and Glacier saw their seasons come to an end after two games at state.

The Broncs (18-5) meet the loser of the CMR-Missoula Sentinel semifinal at 10:30 a.m. at Billings Skyview. The Falcons (14-9) play the loser of the Helena Capital-Billings West semifinal at 10:30 a.m. at MetraPark.

Skyview 50, Flathead 43

Senior guard Jake O'Brien netted 15 points to lead Skyview over Flathead in loser-out action.

O'Brien had eight points in the fourth quarter to help the Falcons hold off the Braves down the stretch. Teammate Danny Little bounced back from a poor game the day before to chip in 12 points and nine rebounds.

"We saw them play (Thursday), and we knew we could beat them, but we just couldn't pull it out," said Flathead senior guard Tanner Salois. "We had some dull moments out there shooting the ball, but we kept fighting."

The Braves went 15 of 56 from the floor (27 percent) and had 14 turnovers after halftime.

Salois scored 18 points, including four makes from beyond the 3-point line, to lead Flathead in scoring. He and junior guard Joe Pistorese hit back-to-back treys with less than a minute to play to draw the Braves within a basket, 45-43.

"I didn't want our season to end," said Salois, who had seven points in the opening quarter. "There wasn't much time left, so I knew I had to start taking shots."

Skyview sealed the win by making 5 of 8 free throws the rest of the way.

Salois also hit a 3-pointer at the end of the third to draw the Braves within 31-28 heading into the final quarter. Pistorese chipped in nine points for Flathead, which ended its year at 12-10.

Sophomore Haakon Nordrum came off the bench to score six of his seven points in the second quarter, when the Falcons rallied to take a 23-19 lead at halftime.

Senior 61, Glacier 50

Senior forward Danny Desin scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half as the Broncs shook free of the Wolfpack in the day's other elimination game.

Glacier missed its first eight shots of the fourth quarter and trailed 56-43 before junior guard Bryan Chery made a 3-pointer with less than a minute to play.

Senior, by contrast, converted 4 of 6 shots from the field and 13 of 20 attempts from the free-throw line in the fourth.

"We struggled shooting the ball and they didn't," Harkins said. "Senior got on a run there at the end and did a good job of putting the ball in the hole. They showed they can do a lot of things."

Desin had 10 points in the fourth quarter, when the Broncs outscored the Wolfpack 21-11. Senior led 40-39 heading into the final frame and promptly went on a 12-2 run, which was capped by a three-point play from Desin.

Kerry Heard added 17 points and Dillon Ness had 10 for Senior.

Chery drained four 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 20 points. He hit three treys in the second half.

"He's a streaky shooter," Harkins said. "When he gets hot he's a great shooter, and fortunately for us he got hot because we were struggling there."

The Wolfpack finished 16 of 45 from the floor (36 percent).

Senior forward Shay Smithwick-Hann added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Pack, who ended their season with a 14-9 mark. Senior guard Grahm Schmaltz had 10 points before fouling out.

"We're losing an amazing senior class," Harkins said. "They came over (to Glacier) and took some risks when they did it, but showed some great heart and commitment. They set a great example of commitment for the younger kids."
