BILLINGS - A long first half made for a long day for the Missoula Sentinel Spartans, who started slow and lost to Billings West 42-39 Saturday in the State AA girls' basketball consolation game.

Kylie Nielsen scored 12 points and Cassie Langstraat hit two tie-breaking free throws with 18.6 seconds left for the Bears, who led 10-0, dominated the boards and barely held on at MetraPark.

West began the season 1-6, including a 56-48 setback to these Spartans in December. The Golden Bears were 7-12 before winning five of their last six - they ousted Butte 63-53 Saturday morning - to finish 12-13.

Sentinel, which downed Helena Capital 57-48 in a loser-out game at MetraPark to make the consolation, finished 20-5. The Spartans didn't draw a lot of preseason attention but nearly nailed down their first state trophy since 2004, when they took third.

"I thought we played well," said Sentinel coach Karen Deden, whose team battled back to tie the game at 39-all on McCall Hasquet's 3-pointer with a minute remaining. "But the thing is, in tournaments like these - the third straight day, the fourth game - it's hard to come back.

"Everybody who got down today, lost."

Danielle Muri, who had 11 points, and Nielsen hit 3-pointers to spark West's opening 10-0 surge. Sentinel's D.J. Reinhardt and Kate Patenaude hit second-quarter threes to pare the gap to 17-12, but the Spartans missed their last shots of the half. They weren't bad looks, either.

"I don't know what that was all about," said senior Bryn Hasquet, who had 19 points in the morning win over Capital and six against the taller Bears in the nightcap. "Their defense in general was very good and our shots just weren't falling."

By halftime, Sentinel was shooting just 16 percent - 3 for 19 - and had been outrebounded 24-9. And West's lead was just 22-16.

It was 30-20 with 2:43 left in the third quarter when some full-court pressure helped Sentinel climb back.

A three-point play from Reinhardt started things, and a basket from McCall Hasquet cut the gap to 32-31 with 5:48 left in the game. Bryn Hasquet's basket with 3:01 left brought Sentinel to 36-35.

Two shots to take the lead by Reinhardt, who had 14 points, fell away and Nielsen hit down low, then made a free throw to put West up 39-36 with 1:24 remaining.

Then Reinhardt found McCall Hasquet for the game-tying three.

West answered by working the ball around Sentinel's defense, then inside to Langstraat. Her free throws were her first points; she added another free throw with 6.6 seconds left after rebounding a missed Reinhardt three.

Deden had nothing but praise for her players, including Patenaude, who had 11 points in the win over Capital.

"She must have caused six turnovers in our morning game," Deden said. "I want to credit Bryn Hasquet - she's probably one of the best shooters Sentinel has ever had. Teams had to change their defenses for her."

McCall Hasquet had 12 points for the Spartans, who shot 45 percent in the second half.

"I'm happy that we came back - I'm glad we got so close," said Bryn Hasquet. "I'd rather we'd been a little closer, but I'm proud of my team for coming back."

Sentinel 57, Capital 49

The Spartans started quick in this one, riding 3-pointers from Patenaude and Reinhardt to an 8-1 lead.

Capital (14-9) cut the gap to 23-22 in the second quarter and 39-37 late in the third, but couldn't catch Sentinel.

Bryn Hasquet was key both times. She converted a three-point play to help Sentinel to a 28-22 halftime lead, and hit a three to put the Spartans up 42-37 heading into the final quarter.

There, Sentinel hit 13 of 17 free throws to clinch its second win over Capital in three meetings this season.

Maggie Rickman scored 15 points to lead the Bruins. Kaci Matthies chipped in 12 and Sammi Bignell added 11.

Reinhardt had 16 for Sentinel.

At Billings Skyview, Muri scored 26 points - hitting 15 of 23 at the line - to help the Golden Bears eliminate Butte in a foul-plagued, loser-out contest.

Lexie Nelson scored 32 points in her final game as a Bulldog. It was the sixth 30-point outing of the year for the Montana Lady Griz signee, but it wasn't enough for Butte, which scored just three third-quarter points and fell behind 38-29.
