HELENA - Thursday was a tough day for Western AA teams at the State AA softball tournament at the Batch Fields.
Eastern AA squads won all four first-round games on the day, sending each Western AA club into the losers' bracket.
Great Falls Russell blanked Helena Capital 9-0 before Butte downed Kalispell Glacier 7-5, Billings Senior beat Western AA champion Missoula Big Sky 12-3 and Billings West outlasted Missoula Sentinel 4-3 in eight innings.
Play was extended due to the fear of poor weather conditions the rest of the weekend. In loser-out action, Glacier (19-4) defeated Capital and Big Sky (14-8) squeaked past Sentinel 9-8 in eight innings.
In late second-round games, West beat Senior 3-2 and Butte defeated Russell 2-1.
Friday's action begins at 9 a.m. with loser-out battles as Glacier takes on Senior (16-10) and Big Sky faces Russell (20-3). Winners of those games meet in the loser-takes fourth game at 11 a.m. while West (20-5) takes on Butte (17-7) in the undefeated game.
The loser-takes-fourth winner meets the undefeated game loser at 1 p.m. in the loser-takes-third contest. That game's winner advances to the championship round against the West-Butte winner at 3 p.m.
