GREAT FALLS - The contrast between Billings and Missoula at the State AA track and field meet could not have been more stark.

Billings Senior ran away with the girls' championship in every sense of the phrase on Saturday, scoring 120 points behind a versatile group of tracksters. It was the Broncs' first team title in school history and it came under skies that were considerably calmer than Friday's at Memorial Stadium.

Billings Skyview, on the other hand, squeaked out its first boys' championship since 1993 and - not to be outdone - Billings West was runner-up in both the girls' and boys' team standings. The Falcons scored 96 points to edge the Golden Bears, who'd won the previous four Class AA boys' titles. The West boys had 59 points on the final day of the two-day competition to finish with 86; its girls' team had 85 points.

Missoula's schools, by contrast, failed to place at state for the first time since 2004. In addition, no Missoula athlete or relay team won a title through 34 events.

Kalispell Glacier earned its first state trophy in track and field when the girls' team finished third. The Wolfpack scored 66 points to finish nearly 20 points behind West. Kalispell Flathead's boys were also third, coming in 22 points behind the Bears.

The Big Sky girls were the only Missoula team to break into the top half of the field. The Eagles took seventh, one point behind last year's winner Butte (34). Flathead's girls and Bozeman tied for fourth.

Among Saturday's highlights were another 1-2 finish by the Aragon sisters of Senior, this time in the 800 meters, and a sweep of the 100 and 200 by Skyview's Gage Pickering. Teammate Mike Nguyen finished second in the 100 and third in the 200.

Danielle Aragon, a sophomore, edged her sister, senior Alexa, with a time of 2:14.14 in the girls' 800. The elder Aragon beat her sister in Friday's 1,600. She also added a pair of runner-up finishes in the 3,200 and pole vault on Saturday.

The younger Aragon ran on the Broncs' long relay team that took second, while junior Brianna Eaton added a win in the 200 and classmate Chloe Kanning was second in the 100. There were two false starts in the girls' 100 dash finals, including Missoula Big Sky junior Morgan Braby, who had the second-fastest qualifying time during trials.

Glacier's Maddey Frey won the race in a time of 12.62, which isn't too shabby considering all the extra trigger pulling done by the race starter.

"I was shaking in the blocks, especially after that second (gun)," said Frey, who had an empty lane on each side. "I've never had that happen before."

Frey took second in the 200 to add another silver medal to her collection. She was runner-up in the long jump on Friday. Teammate Lexy Boschee, who also placed in the long jump, won the triple jump on Saturday to really help the Wolfpack clean up.

Boschee jumped 35 feet, 11 inches and was obviously more pleased with the condition of the pit compared to the day before.

"It was horrible. It was so hard and muddy," she recalled. "When you'd land you could hear it in the stands, the oooohs and aaaahs, because it'd splash up and get you all dirty. I definitely had to do some laundry last night."

Boschee, a sophomore, also won Friday's high jump contest and was second in Saturday's 100 hurdles, despite competing in the event for just the fourth time ever.

Missoula Sentinel freshman Liz Harper was third in the high hurdles and second in the 300 hurdles. She out-leaned Big Sky sophomore Morgan Struble, who came into state with the second-fastest time in the 300s this spring.

"Most of these girls had beaten me during the year," Harper said, "so it was kind of nice to beat them and get closure for the season."

The Flathead boys earned their first trophy since winning the State AA meet in Helena in 2003. The Braves were led by senior Jesse Bennett, who added the 1,600 title to the 800 crown he won on Friday. The University of Mary-bound runner finished in 4:25.02 to edge teammate Leif Castren.

Flathead senior Karl Ingram started the day with a second-place showing in the javelin.

Sentinel senior Brian Maus placed fifth in the discus to end his two-year reign as boys' champ. He went 153-3 on his first throw, but couldn't catch West's Alex White, who threw 168-6.

Sentinel's Justin Meyer placed fourth in the javelin and teammate Jake Turner was fifth in the 1,600. The only other boys' placer from Missoula was Big Sky's Michael Duncan, who was fourth in the triple jump after taking sixth in the long jump the day before.
