BILLINGS - The fifth-ranked Arlee Warriors are one step away from playing for a state championship after they knocked off No. 3 Culbertson 59-56 in Thursday evening's first-round finale of the State C boys' basketball tournament.

The Warriors (24-2) will meet Power in Friday's 8 p.m. semifinal for a spot in Saturday night's title tilt. The Pirates (19-5) earned their berth in the semis by downing St. Labre 79-52.

In the tournament opener, Circle edged Drummond 41-38 before Big Sandy rolled to a 100-65 win over Northern Cheyenne. The Cowboys (21-5) will face the sixth-ranked Pioneers (21-4) Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the first semifinal.

Loser-out play begins Friday at 12:30 p.m. when Drummond (20-4) takes on Northern Cheyenne (15-7) before St. Labre (20-5) faces Culbertson (23-2) at 2 p.m.

Circle 41, Drummond 38

After the teams battled to a 16-16 tie at halftime, the Wildcats opened the second quarter on an 11-0 run before the Trojans clawed their way back to tie it 38-38 with with 1:15 to play.

Circle held the ball for a final shot and Trevor Kleppelid was fouled with six seconds left. He made 1 of 2 free throws to take the lead before Drummond turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds play. The Wildcats scored a layup at the buzzer to seal it.

Bryan Gardner had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Brock Loudon scored 12 for Circle.

Neil Mannix scored 14 to lead the Trojans.

Blake Brumwell and Corbin Pearson led the way as the Pioneers rolled to victory.

The 6-foot-7 Brumwell scored 38 points and pulled down 16 rebounds while the 6-5 Pearson collected 30 points, 15 rebounds and 15 assists. Taylor Ophus added 17 points for the Pioneers.

Big Sandy raced to a 30-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and led by 31 at halftime.

Gary Spear scored 18 to lead the Eagles.

Travis Somerfield posted a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Pirates into the semifinals.

Willy VandenBos scored 15, Nolan Vick had 14 and Gus Somerfeld added 13 for Power, which led by eight at halftime before pulling away with a 21-10 burst in the third quarter.

Hayden Vick pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds for the Pirates, who won the battle of the boards 49-29.

Ty Emerson led the Braves with 14 points.

The Cowboys grabbed a double-digit lead in the first half, but the Warriors fought back to within seven at halftime.

Arlee rallied to take the lead late in the fourth quarter. In the final moments, Thomas McClure blocked a game-tying 3-point attempt at the final buzzer by Culberton's Fred Lester, who drained five treys on the night and finished with 17 points.

Jesse Pfau scored 17 to lead Arlee, which received 12 from Kody Morigeau, and 10 apiece from Kasey Bridgewater and Kyle Felsman. Felsman grabbed a team-best six rebounds.
