GREAT FALLS - By all accounts, the Charlo boys' track and field team is doing just fine at the State C meet. OK, make that just Stephen Delaney's account.

"We're looking good so far," said Delaney, moments after placing in the 300 hurdles along with teammate Cody Nitschke. "And we got most of our big points coming up (Saturday) with our relays."

The Vikings sit in third place after the first day of competition on Friday at soggy Memorial Stadium. Ennis employed its stud distance runner, senior Gavin Owens, and a trio of discus throwers to pull in front of the boys' field after eight events. Owens won the 3,200 and was second in the 800 as the Mustangs tallied 36 points.

Last year's state runner-up Joliet (28) is next in line, with Charlo (23) and Terry (22) neck-and-neck heading into Saturday's finals. Defending champ Harlowton (16) is sixth.

The Vikings, who entered the two-day meet as one of the favorites, struck it rich with a pair of placers in both the intermediate hurdles and pole vault. Nitschke was second in the 300 to Harlowton senior Caleb Dick, who repeated with a slower time than last year's - 39.81 seconds.

Nitschke was clocked at 40.75 and Delaney, a sophomore, took fifth in 42.59. The runner-up medal around Nitschke's neck was a sweet redemption for the senior, who stumbled two seasons ago at state in the same event. That year's meet, in Helena, was also held in a deluge.

"This reminds me of two years ago. I wasn't really prepared for it then and I fell flat on my face," said Nitschke of the conditions. "This year I was ready for it. It's kind of fun, actually."

Charlo's Chance Firestone and Chance Rosenbaum placed third and fifth, respectively, in the pole vault, to secure eight more points for the team. Firestone cleared 12 feet, but was a foot behind winner Kirk Capdeville of Saco/Hinsdale. Capdeville, a senior, won last year, too, and was the state-leader all this season at 15-2.

The Vikings' Michael Smith added a fourth-place finish in the 3,200 and Rosenbaum was sixth in the 800, which went to Joliet's Beau Milton. Milton, the class leader in the two-lapper, held off Owens, who was trying to steal some points with an almost-certain distance sweep.

Owens is favored to win the 1,600 on Saturday. Teammates Casey Jensen, Dylan Ryan and Jake Yochim gave the Mustangs a huge boost on Friday by claiming spots 2-3-4 in the discus finals.

Charlo's 400 relay team turned in the fastest time during trials and its 1,600 relay team is the quickest in the state, too.

Terry's Taylor Pisk and Jerett Freiboth went first and third in the javelin.

Ennis grabbed the girls' team lead after an abbreviated first day of action for them. Officials postponed the pole vault because of rain and only four events were finalized.

Senior Taylor McNally repeated in the discus and teammate Emily Gregg was third to help the Mustangs scratch out 18 points. Joliet (16) is second with Lima, North Star and Winnett/Grass Range tied for third at 10 points each.

McNally, who threw the disc 112-8, is eyeing a three-peat in the shot put on Saturday.
