Missoula Sentinel's boys' track and field team was able to win eight events at the Sentinel-Capital Dual on Thursday in Missoula, but Helena Capital proved too strong, topping the Spartans 76-66.
Sentinel's girls won eight of the 17 events, but its depth pulled it even with the Bruins as the teams tied at 72.
On the boys' side, Sentinel's Nolan Staats swept the sprints, taking the 100 meters in 11.99 seconds and the 200 in 23.98, Staats also won the long jump with a leap of 20-4.
Capital won six of the 10 track events, but the Spartans were able to claim victory in both long distance races thanks to Marshall Beatty. Beatty won the 1,600 by 24 seconds and the 3,200 by one minute.
Just as they did the meet, the two girls' teams split the races. Sentinel's Molly MacDonald took the 1,600 and 3,200 by wide margins. The Spartans also won both relays and the 400.
Shayla Palmer, who took fifth in the pole vault at the 2014 state meet, won the event on Thursday with a jump of 10 feet. Jordan Schweyen (triple jump) and Tana Garden (discus) picked up field wins for Sentinel.
