HELENA — Twenty-four hours after knocking Helena out of first place, the Bighorns exacted revenge Saturday against the visiting Missoula Jr. Bruins.
Helena jumped to a two-goal lead in the first period and cruised to a 5-2 victory at the Helena Ice Arena. Missoula fell to 17-16 while the Bighorns boosted their record to 27-5-1 in reclaiming first place in the NA3 Hockey League's Frontier Division.
Hayden Seitz gave the Bighorns a lead at 4:23 in the first period on assists by Hunter Pierce and Darren Donovan. Missoula goalie Seth Daniel gave up a goal to Donovan roughly six minutes later as his team fell into a 2-0 hole.
The Jr. Bruins got on the board when Vadim Zubkov scored on the power play at 14:04 in the first period. Misha Akatnov and Christian Ward were credited with assists.
JJ Blondin stretched Helena's lead to 3-1 when he scored at 15:55 of the first period. The Bighorns added second-period goals by Porter Tirrell and Donovan.
Zubkov scored his second goal at 3:46 in the third period on assists from Ward and Akatnov. It proved to be the last goal that Helena goalie Alexander Rogers surrendered.
Helena finished with a 38-27 edge in shots. The Jr. Bruins racked up 47 penalty minutes to the Bighorns' 33.
The Jr. Bruins will be back in action Friday when they play at Butte at 7:30 p.m.
