MISSOULA — Several Missoula youth tennis players have put themselves in position to bring home a title at the Western Montana Open.
The junior division play at the regional tournament started on Thursday and will conclude on Friday.
Top-seeded Sentinel standout Cody Curtis will face Glacier's Rory Smith in the title match of the boys' 18 singles draw. Curtis needed a 6-7 (2), 6-2, 1-0 (12) win over Victor's Caleb Warnken in the semifinals to move on. Smith beat Hellgate's Austin Moseley in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
In the girls' 18 singles draw, top seed Kendal Kovick, a former Missoula resident who lives in Las Vegas, will take on Loyola's Lauren Bodlovic in a semifinal. On the other side of the bracket, Sentinel's Meredith Murdock will face Billings' Stevi Parker. All four competitors won their quarterfinal matches in straight sets, with Kovick posting a 6-0, 6-0 win.
Kovick also advanced to the semifinals of the girls' 16 singles draw with a 6-0, 6-0 win and will face Ashlyn Sandall of Dillon. In the other semifinal, Corvallis' Holly Mahon will take on Madelyn Dibble of Spokane.
It'll be an all-Missoula Hellgate title match in the boys' 16 singles draw. Hamilton Smith upset top-seeded Owen Sanford of Bozeman 6-2, 6-3. He'll face Colton Quirk, who won two matches in straight sets to advance to the final round.
In the boys' 14 singles draw, Sanford advanced to the finals, where he'll face Turner Cox of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Both advanced with straight-set wins, including 6-0, 6-0 for Sanford.
Three Bozeman competitors will play in the girls' 14 singles semifinals. In one semifinal, Hailey Buss will take on Laine Banziger. In the other one, top-seeded Nora Schrank will face Gretchen Drews of Spokane Valley.
In round one of the co-ed 10 singles, Bozeman's Weslley Banziger beat Bozeman's Ashton Schrank 4-1, 4-0, and Lolo's Titan O'Hara defeated Whitefish's Owen Erickson 4-1, 4-1. In the second round, Erickson defeated Whitefish's Eli Erickson 4-1, 4-1, and O'Hara beat Banziger 4-0, 4-0. In round three, O'Hara beat Schrank, 4-0, 4-1.
In the girls' 18 doubles, Dibble and Parker beat the Missoula team of Elizabeth Bowles and Maya Nguyen-Haberneski 6-0, 6-2. Missoula's Melanie Benson and Lauren Bodlovic also beat Bowles and Nguyen-Haberneski, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (3).
In the girls' 16 doubles, Ronan's Berkley Ellis and Polson's Qia Harlan beat the Missoula duo of Jaden Brinda and Bethanie Hicks, 7-6 (5), 6-1. Ellis and Hardin also defeated Bozeman's Hailey Buss and Nora Schrank, 7-5, 1-6, 1-0, 7-6 (9).
Playing for the mixed 18 doubles title will be a pair of Missoula teams. Big Sky's Cassie Farago and Kristopher Rosenbaum will face Sentinel's Curtis and Murdock.
