MISSOULA — Devon Sikora is showing his mettle this weekend in the Western Montana Open adult tennis tournament.
The St. Ignatius man punched his ticket into the semifinals of open singles Saturday, fighting through stifling heat and stiff competition from Missoula's Stash Wrobel in an 0-6, 7-5, 10-5 victory. Sikora, a three-time state doubles champ in Louisiana before moving to Montana, will face Sam Garetson of Missoula in a Sunday morning semifinal, with the winner playing in the finals Sunday afternoon.
On the other half of the men's adult open singles bracket, 14-year-old Kalispell phenom Rory Smith will battle Noah Strizich of Missoula for a spot in the finals. Smith, who won the boys' 18 singles title Friday, upset top-seeded Brad Knutson, a Billings tennis pro, 3-6, 6-3, 10-4.
In men's open doubles, Sunday's title match is set. Sikora and JP Violette of Missoula will battle Knutson and Nelson Miller of Billings at 12:30 p.m.
In mixed open doubles, Sunday's semifinals are set. Strizich and Missoula partner Morgan Daley will take on Miller and Katelyn Schaub of Helena. On the other side, Missoula's Gudren Schroeder and Helena's Eric Stern will battle Tara Jensen of Missoula and Doug Morton of Billings for a spot in the Sunday afternoon championship.
In the three-player women's open singles draw, Daley dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Kendall Kovick of Las Vegas in the title match.
