OREM, Utah – The Missoula Osprey made sure they weren’t the only ones eliminated from the Pioneer League’s first-half playoff chase.

Behind six solid innings from starter Ross Gerdeman, the Osprey bounced the Orem Owlz from contention in the South Division with a 5-2 victory Wednesday night at the Home of the Owlz.

Gerdeman, a right-hander who was drafted in the 35th round a year ago, gave up one run on five hits over his six full innings.

Gerdeman struck out five batters, while walking two, but not until his final two innings of work. It was enough to even his season record at 2-2.

Missoula won for the second straight night and third time in four games. Unfortunately, the O’s (17-19) were eliminated from the North’s first-half title chase during a six-game losing streak last week.

Missoula pounded out 13 hits on Wednesday and didn’t commit an error in the field.

Catcher Michael Perez went 2 for 3 with a three-run home run in the first inning to propel the O’s. It was his fifth homer of the season.

Breland Almadova, who was one of five other players with multiple hits, had a two-RBI triple in the third to chase Orem starter Baudillo Lopez.

The Owlz used five pitchers to stop the hit parade, while Missoula turned to just two more after Gerdeman.

Chris Capper pitched two scoreless innings and Chase Stevens gave up a solo homer to Anthony Bemboom in the ninth before closing the door with a strikeout.

Wade Hinkle was the only Owlz player with two hits in the game. Orem (17-19) began the day two games out of first with three remaining in the first half.

Thursday is a travel day for the league. The Osprey host Great Falls on Friday and Saturday to wrap up the first half of the season.
