FORT BENTON - Defending champion Alicia Van Egmond of Manhattan Christian built a 12-stroke lead, but Superior girls led the team race after the opening round of the state Class C girls' golf tournament Tuesday at Signal Point Golf Club.

Van Egmond fired a 96 over the 6,092-yard course, and was one of three Manhattan Christian girls in the top seven. But Superior had three in the top six - senior Heather Riener and junior Tanine Rennick, tied for second at 108, and junior Brittney Henderson in sixth at 111.

Superior's score of 446 was 23 strokes better than Manhattan Christian's 469. Only four schools qualified full four-player girls' squads.

Michael Frye of Culbertson shot a four-over 76 to take an eight-shot lead in the boys' tourney. Frye was the 2001 state champion and finished second to Superior's Dan Hazlett last year. Hazlett was tied for third with an 86 after the first round.

Gardiner, in its first year of golf, took a 276-279 lead over Manhattan Christian's boys. Valier was five strokes back at 281. Superior, the defending team champion, was a close fourth with 285.

The tournament concludes Wednesday on the same course.
