Trojan machine three-peats

Trojan machine three-peats

With a third straight Western C Divisional track and field title all but wrapped up, the most exciting thing for the Drummond Trojans Saturday was the Tel and Chase Reynolds Hurdles Show.

It wasn't so much a showdown as it was a showcase of contrasting styles. Let's just say that Tel, a sophomore, was smoother through the 300 hurdles while providing the Trojans their only individual win on the day.

Chase Reynolds whistled.

"I need some practice on that one," said the senior, who finished fourth, helping Drummond to 108 points at Missoula County Stadium. "I just started last week because I needed some events. I thought I'd get in one with my brother, and I almost beat him the first time (running 44.01 seconds to Tel's 42.83 at the District 13-C meet).

"This time he kind of. Š I need to get some form. I'm long-jumping out there."

That race aside, Drummond was a finely tuned machine, piling up points in bunches while leaving Sheridan (69fi points) and Gardiner (47) far behind.

Brandon O'Dell and Cody Alt finished second and third in the pole vault to add 14 to the Trojan total. Tel Reynolds was second in the 110 hurdles to Sheridan's Tyler Beal, adding eight more points. Alex Verlanic was third in the discus Saturday, after claiming third in the shot on Friday. Clay Cantrell was second to Gardiner's Damon Mitchell in the 100, and third in the 200, which Mitchell also won.

That depth should make a dent at the State C meet next week in Helena, where the Trojans are going for a second straight championship. The top five individual placers and relays advance to Helena, and Chase Reynolds will have plenty to do, including the triple jump, where he was fifth Saturday.

"We've got a pretty good chance," said the senior, who like Verlanic is a University of Montana football signee. "Get all the kids fired up, and I think we can get another one."

Matching Drummond's brother act was Twin Bridges' twin sister act of Kerri and Ashley Mullholland, sophomore sprinters and members of the relay teams. The Falcons won only the long relay on Saturday, and that pushed them past Charlo and Victor for their first divisional crown.

As it did for Drummond, depth did much of the damage for the Falcons, who boast no seniors. Freshman Kelcey Lott, Kerri Mullholland and junior Katie Degel picked up points in the sprints. Degel added four points in the shot put and two in the triple jump. Ashley Mulholland was second in both the triple and long jumps, matching Degel's individual point total.

Yet Twin still trailed 14-C champion Charlo, which had 65 points, and Victor, which had 64, heading into the final race.

The Mulhollands, plus sophomore Leah Cox and junior Courtney Nichols, led nearly wire to wire, finishing in 4:17.40. Those 10 points gave the Falcons 73.

"That's our best time ever," said Ashley Mulholland, Kerri's older (by 49 minutes) sister. "It feels great. We thought we'd have a good chance."

Several teams had chances, including Charlo, which got a second throwing win from Amanda Murphy, this time in the discus, and a victory from Adri Hammond in the pole vault.

Victor put a lot on the shoulders of Amanda Burrington, and the senior responded with a hurdles sweep, plus second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 Saturday. Noxon's Karissa Wilson won both sprints.

Lincoln rallied from its slow Friday to score 53 points, good for fifth. In fourth was Drummond, which got a victory from Mattie Murphy in the triple jump Saturday. Holly Dahl, Murphy and Tamara Roselles went 2-3-4 in the pole vault.

Lima's Amy Allen won the 800 to join Burrington, Wilson and Amanda Murphy as double-winners at the meet. Allen won the 400 on Friday. Sheridan's Jordon Degel won the high jump Saturday, while Harrison's Kaysha Young took the 3,200.

Gardiner's Mitchell added a victory in the long jump to become the boys' side lone triple-winner. Sheridan freshman Joel Buyan added the 1,600 title on Saturday to his 3,200 victory from Friday.

Noxon's Tad Singbeil cleared 6 feet, 2 inches to win the high jump Saturday. Harrison's Brent Lehman won the discus. West Yellowstone's Cameron Carsley took the triple jump, and holding off the Drummond vaulting corps was Charlo's Bo Herak, clearing 12-6.
