State Class AA softball: Kalispell carries West's banner

GREAT FALLS - Kalispell's Shannon Berry scored the winning run in the 12th inning as the Bravettes beat Billings Skyview 1-0 in 12 innings Thursday at the state Class AA softball tournament.

Berry scored from third on a balk by the Skyview catcher when she jumped out of the catcher's box before the pitcher released the ball on a pitch-out attempt. The run put an end to a pitchers duel between Erin Brinkman and Kalispell's Jordan Waverek. Waverek went the distance to pick up her ninth win of year.

Kalispell (15-8) advanced to Friday's quarterfinal match against Eastern AA champion Billings Senior at 1 p.m. Senior, the 2000 state runner-up, won its match against Great Falls 5-1.

Four-time defending champ Great Falls Russell beat Missoula Hellgate and Helena High to find its way back into the undefeated bracket. Butte upset Western AA champion Missoula Sentinel 3-0 and will face CMR in the other quarterfinal game. Loser-out games begin at 9 a.m.

Kalispell 1, Billings Skyview 0: Berry led off the 12th inning with a bloop single that the left fielder trapped. Natalie Luehr then laid down a sac bunt that the third baseman overthrew to leave runners on first and third with no outs. On the next pitch Skyview attempted the pitch-out, which brought the balk call.

Waverek allowed four hits, struck out 14 and gave up one walk in her shutout victory. Brinkman struck out 14 and allowed a walk, but gave up seven hits. Valissa Sneck went 3-for-5 to lead the Bravettes.

Butte 3, Missoula Sentinel 0: Butte scored three runs in the top of the third inning to upend Western AA champ Sentinel. The Bulldogs' Leena Worrell held the Spartans (14-9) to just two hits in picking up the win. Butte was the West's fifth seeded team. Maren Buck took the loss for Sentinel, which had a first-round bye.

Great Falls Russell 1, Helena 0: Courtney Funderburk threw a two-hitter as the defending champion CMR girls moved into the quarterfinals with a win over Helena. Christy Wankel, Nikki Alexander and Kodi Kuka had the Rustlers three hits.

CMR 5, Missoula Hellgate 4: The Rustlers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead and edge out Hellgate. The Knights took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth but CMR responded with two of its own to hold on. Nikki Alexander had two hits, including a home run, and Christy Wankel went 3-for-4 for the Rustlers. Courtney Funderburk picked up her first win of the day. Mandy Hays, Karin Gorseth, Ellen Buchman and Heidi Garr all had hits for the Knights (4-17).
