Suspect sought in stabbing at mill site

Missoula law enforcement officials are looking for a man who stabbed a 26-year-old Missoula man in the chest late Tuesday evening during an altercation at a transient camp at the old Champion mill site west of McCormick Park.

Sgt. Larry Jackson of the Missoula County Sheriff's Department said Meredith Wounded Eye reported that an unidentified male struck him in the head with a brick and stabbed him below the left clavicle during an argument Tuesday at about midnight. Wounded Eye received stitches at St. Patrick Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Jackson said Wounded Eye stated that he spent the evening drinking with a white male and an Indian female who he first encountered at a railroad overpass on Missoula's North Side. The trio continued drinking at a camp set up in the old mill site along the Clark Fork River.

At about midnight, Jackson said, an argument ensued between Wounded Eye and the other man. While Wounded Eye was unable to remember what the argument was about, Jackson said, he did recall the man hitting him in the head with a brick and stabbing him.

Wounded Eye left the scene and called police a short time later. When officers arrived, they were unable to find either the man or the woman. Jackson said they did recover a brick at the camp site.

The stabbing suspect is described as a white male in his early 40s, standing about 6-foot-3 and weighing more than 200 pounds with a large stomach. He has grayish blond, collar-length hair and was wearing a brown, smooth leather cowboy hat, white T-shirt, blue jeans, tennis shoes and a black and gray nylon windbreaker jacket.

Anyone with information on the suspect is asked to call Crimestoppers at 721-4444.
