Missoulian Athletes aiming for NCAA qualifying times
Seven of the University of Montana's top track athletes go to California this weekend to compete at the prestigious Mount SAC Relays.
Suzanne Krings pole vaults, Brad Treat and Scott Paul run in the men's 5,000 meters, and Heather Anderson races in the women's 5,000 on Friday night. Calvin Coleman long jumps and Sabrina Monro runs in the 1,500 on Saturday. Holly Gabbert is entered in the 400 hurdles on Sunday.
Anderson will try to improve on her NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 5,000 of 16:46.30.
Mount SAC provides perhaps the best setting for UM athletes to reach qualifying marks for the national meet. It's considered the opening of the outdoor track season for many elite athletes with their eyes on the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, in September.
The invitational portion of the meet starts with women's pole vault on Saturday, and resumes in full force on Sunday. UM competes in the college portion of the three-day meet, which also includes a youth meet.
Most of the rest of Montana's team will go to Bozeman on Saturday for the Montana State Open. MSU and a number of unattached athletes are expected to compete.
