Missoulian Distance runner clocks NCAA qualifying time

What's a girl gotta do? Heather Anderson of the University of Montana ran the fastest 10,000 meters of her life Friday night, and an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA track championships in June to boot.

But the junior's smashing time of 34 minutes, .27 seconds was good for only 21st place Friday night in a remarkable race at the Mt. SAC Relays in Carmel, Calif.

Anderson qualified for the NCAAs last year with a best of 35:05.2. The field she ran against Friday, in the invitational portion of Mt. SAC, included only a handful of collegians. The winner, in 32:03, was former Olympian Annette Peters, running for Asics. The top nine runners broke 33 minutes.

On Saturday night in Carmel, Sabrina Monro ran a season-best 1,500 of 4:31, and Calvin Coleman long jumped 23 feet, 10 inches. Coleman owns the school record of 25-3/4.

Monro too was hoping for better.

"She's a little short of racing right now, and they went out a little slow," UM coach Tom Raunig said. "She got stuck in lane three, and it was one of those races where she got pushed and shoved a lot."

In another meet in Long Beach, Holly Gabbert placed third in the 400 hurdles with a season-best time of 61.95 seconds. Suzanne Krings placed third in pole vault at 11-6.

The bulk of Montana's team was in Bozeman for the Montana State Open, where junior Jamie Slyder of Broadview broke her own school shot put record. Slyder, who set an indoor record of 46-3 and an outdoor mark of 45-33/4 on April 1, unleashed a put of 47-3 1/2 to easily defeat Montana State rival Jennifer Allen. Allen's best mark was 45-1/2.

Renee Dunn, a UM sophomore from La Center, Wash., came within three inches of the school record in long jump, sailing 18-71/4. It was her personal best by half a foot. Dunn also became the third Lady Griz this spring to triple jump 37 feet, going 37-81/2.

Julie Deming, a guard for UM's basketball team, won high jump at 5-foot-6, a Big Sky Conference qualifying mark. Laura Kruschke, a freshman from Frenchtown, recorded her first collegiate win in the 800.

Jesse Barnes, coming back from an injury after winning the Big Sky Conference cross country title last fall, qualified for the conference championships with a run of 15:04.23 in the men's 5,000. Minus 21 seconds for altitude adjustment in Bozeman, that bettered the qualifying standard of 14:50.

The MSU Open involved teams from Montana and Montana State, a handful from Montana State-Billings. Redshirts were also able to compete, because it was a non-scoring meet.
