The Missoula Mavericks split a Class AA Legion baseball doubleheader with the Helena Senators Saturday at Lindborg-Cregg Field.
The Mavs won the opener 1-0 behind a stellar pitching performance from David Williams, then lost the nightcap 6-5 in eight innings.
Williams scattered three hits over seven innings to garner the complete game victory, his third against no losses. Williams needed just 60 pitches to dispose of the Senators.
"Williams threw a very, very good game," said Mavericks coach Brent Hathaway.
Ryan Martin laid down a perfect squeeze bunt in the second inning to score the Mavs' only run. Eric Guymon went 1-for-1 with a double for Missoula, which got a tremendous defensive effort at third base from Kris Welker.
In the second game, the Senators scored an unearned run in the seventh to tie the score 5-5 and force extra innings, then scored another unearned run in the eighth to take the victory.
Casey Cordial led the Mavs' offensive attack with a double and two RBIs.
The Mavericks, 8-3 overall, hit the road for a conference-opening doubleheader Sunday against the Glacier Twins in Whitefish.
