Beau Franzen had a day to remember Saturday at the Missoula County Fairgrounds in the finals of the University of Montana rodeo.
Franzen, of Dawson Community College in Glendive, won the men's all-around title when he claimed two individual events, teamed up with his roping partner for another title and took fourth in a third event.
Franzen scored 280 points to help lead Dawson Community College to the men's crown with a overall score of 570. Montana State was second at 360 and Miles Community College in Miles City was third with 195.
The first round took place on Thursday and Friday and the short-go finals were Saturday. The top two finishers from the short go received an automatic bid to the College National Finals Rodeo at Casper, Wyo., in June.
The UM rodeo traditionally wraps up the Big Sky Region's season. However this year, the top 10 contestants in the season standings will be invited to a regional rodeo in Bozeman in two weeks for a shot at advancing to the CNFR.
Franzen had the best time in Saturday's calf-roping finals with a time of 11.8 seconds. Franzen then recorded the fastest team roping time with partner Ryan Siemsen. Together they roped their calf in 9.1 seconds.
Franzen's two-round average was good enough to claim the steer wrestling event and he was fourth in the saddle bronc.
Cody Taton of Dawson won the saddle bronc with a final round score of 72. He also finished second in points for the all-around title.
Teammates Cody Buller and Pat Johnson of Dawson tied for the bull riding lead and were the only two riders to stay aboard in both rounds.
The Western Montana College women won their second straight UM rodeo crown with a score of 365. Montana had 200 points and held off Montana State, which finished with 145, for second in the season standings.
Western's Holly Hayworth won her second consecutive women's all-around title. Hayworth won it last year when her brother, Jake, also won the men's all-around.
Hayworth did the barrels in 17.79 seconds during the short go to win that event. Hayworth's two-round total in goat tying was good enough for fourth.
Teammate Tiffany Wagner was second in barrel racing and in the women's all-around.
Kirby Watt of the University of Montana captured the breakaway roping title. Watt had a time of 3.2 seconds and UM's Hollis Lusse had the fastest time in the goat-tying competition on Saturday. Her time of 10.4 in the short go was good enough to land Lusse a third-place finish.
Men's team scores: Dawson Community College 570, Montana State 360, Miles Community College 195.
Women's team scores: Western Montana College 365, Montana 200, Montana State 145.
