Missoulian State Bureau 'Ax Max,' 'I Voted for O'Keefe' are in demand

HELENA - Democrats and Republicans are battling for voters on the bumper stickers of Montanans' cars and trucks.

The latest is the "Ax Max" bumper sticker distributed by the Montana Republican Party aimed at U.S. Sen. Max Baucus, a Democrat seeking re-election in 2002.

This slogan won a contest on the GOP's Internet Web site, topping a couple of other entries, "Maxed Out. Vote Republican" and "Max Baucus: New York's other senator," according to Mike Kiedrowski, state GOP executive director.

State Democrats, meanwhile, have authorized a bumper sticker paid for by former members of the staff of Mark O'Keefe, the Democratic nominee for governor last year who lost to Republican Gov. Judy Martz. According to Brad Martin, executive director of the state Democratic Party, the sticker says: "Don't Blame Me. I Voted for O'Keefe."

Martin said Democrats also are having a difficult time keeping another bumper sticker in stock. It says: "No Deregulation, No Republicans, No Problem."
