Champs again.

Janie Purdy scored from third on a throwing error in the bottom of the fourth inning to lift Missoula Sentinel to a 2-0 win over Kalispell Tuesday at Sentinel Field. The win came in the opening game of a double header and clinched a second straight Western AA championship for the Spartans, who finished the conference schedule 9-2.

Pitcher Maren Buck threw a one-hitter and struck out five to earn the complete-game victory. The senior, hobbled by a sore knee, also had two singles from the plate.

Kalispell's Jordan Waverek allowed two hits and struck out six in the loss.

In the second game, Sentinel pitcher Stefani Hertz had two doubles from the plate and held Kalispell to three hits as the Spartans claimed a 3-1 non-conference win.

Rosie Fleck, Kristi Burton and Valissa Sneck had the hits for Kalispell.

Pitcher Chelsea Lorenz had 10 strikeouts in the loss for the Bravettes, who finished conference play at 8-4. They're 12-8 overall, while Sentinel moved to 14-7.

The Spartans close out the regular season Thursday at Missoula Big Sky. Kalispell travels to Great Falls Russell and Great Falls High on Friday.

Whitefish sweeps Bigfork

At Bigfork, Whitefish jumped on Western A foe Bigfork for nine runs in the top of the first inning en route to a double-header sweep, 18-0 and 14-8. The first game ended after five innings, as the Bulldogs' Laura Harthan banged out three hits and three RBIs, and Mae Clark and Emily Robison added two singles apiece. Trina Olson blanked the Vals. In Game 2, Robison had two more hits as the Bulldogs jumped to a 10-2 lead in the first three innings. Bigfork matched Whitefish hit for hit, led by Jessi Farris' two hits and a triple by Nikki Zaragoza.

At St. Ignatius, Loyola avenged its worst loss of the year, a 15-2 defeat to St. Ignatius in Missoula in April, in a Class B-C contest. Joscelyn Weber had a pair of hits and Chelsea Gilfillan drove in two runs as the Breakers (8-5, 11-9) won their fourth straight. The homestanding Bulldogs outhit Loyola 14-8, as Cassidy Johnson, Shaylena Piedalue and Shelby Printz collected three hits each, and pitcher Jaspen McDonald added two more. Lynsey Evans struck out four and walked just one for Loyola.

Polson JV beats Stevi

At Stevensville, the Polson JV softball team handed Central A Stevensville a 15-5 loss at home on Tuesday. The Yellowjackets fell to 1-18 on the season after the non-conference loss. No other details were reported.
