Missoulian Men and women take on Weber State

Both University of Montana tennis teams face first-round matches against Weber State as the Big Sky Conference championships begin Thursday in Pocatello, Idaho.

The UM women, 3-10 and the third-place team from the Mountain Region, play the Wildcats (12-7) at 10 a.m. in the single-elimination tournament. The winner meets Idaho State (8-9) on Friday at 2 p.m.

Montana's men (6-10) are the second seed from the Mountain Region and play Weber State (8-13) at 2 p.m. Thursday. That winner meets top-seeded Sacramento State (18-8) at 10 a.m. on Friday.

The field consists of men's and women's teams from Montana, Montana State, Weber State, Idaho State, Northern Arizona, as well as the Cal State Northridge women and Sacramento State men.

Northern Arizona is the defending women's champion, and Sacramento State won the 1999 men's title.

Championship matches are scheduled for Saturday, at 10 a.m. for the women and 2 p.m. for the men.

The matches are scheduled for the Reed Gym Indoor Courts, Juniper Hills Country Club and/or the Pocatello Swim & Tennis Club Outdoor Courts. The forecast for Pocatello calls for some clouds but no rain, with high temperatures in the upper 60s and lower 70s through Saturday.

The UM men blanked Weber State 4-0 in the first round last year before falling to Sac State in the semifinals 4-0. The Weber women downed Montana 5-2 on the first day in 1999.
