WEST YELLOWSTONE, Mont. — The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and CK May Excavating, Inc. have completed work this season on the Targhee Pass East Pavement Preservation project, which includes pavement preservation and other improvements along nearly 9 miles of U.S. Highway 20 (US 20), west of West Yellowstone.
“US 20 is an important route for residents, visitors and businesses,” MDT Butte District Administrator, Geno Liva, said. “With Yellowstone National Park and numerous recreational and lodging destinations nearby, this highway sees significant traffic. We’re pleased with the improvements we’ve made to date and are eager to continue work next year.”
Completed project improvements include milling and resurfacing US 20 from mile markers 0 to 1.2, rebuilding a section of roadway southeast of the South Fork Madison River Bridge between mile markers 4.5 and 4.6 to strengthen the road’s foundation and address damaged pavement, and replacing a failing double culvert at Buttermilk Creek near mile marker 3.5.
Due to cooler temperatures, crews will return next year to apply a seal and cover (chip seal) on the new pavement at all three locations within the project corridor. This work, which requires warm temperatures to bind the chip seal to the asphalt, will conclude the project.
Together, these improvements will provide a smoother and more reliable driving experience, extend the life of the roadway, and reduce long-term maintenance needs.
MDT plans to continue improving the US 20 corridor west of West Yellowstone next year through the Targhee Turn Lanes project. This project will add a center-turn lane between the Mountainside KOA and Denny Creek Road, a left-turn lane at Denny Creek Road, and new signage. These improvements aim to reduce rear-end crashes in the area.
MDT is a workforce of over 2,000 people across Montana determined to do all we can so that you arrive at your destination safely. Our mission is to build, operate, and maintain a safe and resilient transportation system. For more information, visit mdt.mt.gov.
