HELENA, Mont. - The Carroll men's soccer team picked up its largest win of the season on Saturday afternoon, racing past Providence 6-1 on Valley Bank Field at Nelson Stadium.
While comfortably in hunt for a top seed in the upcoming CCC Championship, the Fighting Saints (6-4-2, 5-4-1) came into the weekend looking to improve their position. They did so in a big way, scoring a season-best six goals against the Argos (2-9-1, 2-7-1), their second win over Providence on the season.
It was Nils Benning (Kiel, Germany / SR) who opened the scoring for the Saints. Benning's 12th-minute goal off an assist from Arnaldo Primera (West Midlands, England / FR) gave Carroll an early 1-0 lead.
Providence knotted things up at 1-1 in the 39th minute with Tumelo Selebeng helping pull the Argos back to even right ahead of the halftime break.
A pair of goals just 32 seconds apart would help Carroll pull away for good early in the second half. Both Pedro Teixeira (Braga, Portugal / R-SR) and Arnaldo Primera would score in the 50th minute, blowing the game wide open.
Sean Balen (Mukilteo, Wash. / SR) added another goal just two minutes later, while Teixeira put away the second goal of his brace in the 60th minute to make things 5-1 in favor of the Saints in a hurry.
Felix Billard (Mallorca, Spain / SR) continued his climb towards the program's all-time goal record, moving within one goal of the school record with a 72nd-minute goal to end the offensive onslaught.
The Saints will look to keep momentum rolling into their final road trip of the regular season, as they take on Warner Pacific and Walla Walla next weekend.
